Mixed
Martial Arts
The Mixed Martial Arts program is designed to
give a complete introduction to the techniques
and philosophies of Jiu-Jitsu. Throughout the
course, students will learn standing self-defense
techniques to deal with attacks against grabs,
chokes, headlocks, bear hugs and punches. In addition
to the standing self-defense and takedowns, students
will be introduced to the fundamentals of ground
fighting and the use of the guard, mount and side
control.

KENJUTSU
CLASSES
"The Art of the Sword" Special Introductory

Kenjutsu - The Art of the Samurai Sword
The first recorded historical systematic teachings
of the Japanese long sword began about 800 AD.
This art was studied and practiced by the bushido
(warriors) and samurai through the 11th century.
Kenjutsu is the ancestor of Kendo, a practical
martial art.
Bokken
It was during the Muromachi Period 1336-1600 A.D.
that the use of the bokken became popular. During
this time, the warriors began learning the art
of dueling against a single opponent instead of
fighting in a battlefield situation. This concept
also gave birth to the highly skilled and regarded
samurai.
What Do Kenjutsu Students Wear?
Kenjutsu wear is traditional, consisting usually
of hakama (split skirt trousers), keikogi (a heavy
weight jacket worn tucked in) and obi (belt).
As a rule, there are no belt colors in Kenjutsu,
only titles: Deshi (student), Renshi (instructor),
Kyoshi (teacher), and Hanshi (master).
Principal Aims and Benefits
At Karate International of Durham we emphasize
flexibility and concentration. All classes begin
with stretching, strengthening and centering exercises.
Our training ranges from quiet meditative practice
to vigorous martial techniques. We maintain traditional
etiquette in a friendly atmosphere. The benefits
of regular training are improved confidence, posture,
coordination and stamina with the development
of a more focused mind and flexible body. Self-defense
develops through enhanced concentration and an
understanding of a broad range of martial arts
techniques.
Classes may incorporate Kenjutsu, Kendo and Aiki-Jutsu
with more of a focus on Kenjutsu (sword techniques).
Sword: Etiquette, Battle Katas, Partner Drills,
Disarms & Take-downs. Classes focus on technique
and stance work, free style fencing bouts with
bokken, shinai, and live blades, all developing
a sense and feel of combat. Disarming techniques
are also practiced.

The Functional CORE Training program is designed
to build stability from the core of your body, strengthen
each muscle group and stimulate your metabolism.
Exercises alternate between the upper body, lower
body and core muscle groups so you can work longer

Saturday's 11:30 am - 12:30 pm. Ages 10 years
old and above.
The Situational Self-Defense Program teaches
practical and realistic skills. You will learn
how assailants think and how to react both verbally
and physically for self-protection. Classes are
taught to individuals of any level of fitness.

SESSION 1 - Common Sense Defense Understanding
aggression and how to become aware of hostile
tendencies in others is the beginning of the first
session. "Situational Evaluation" is demonstrated
to show how the proper use of "options" such as
withdrawing or ignoring, etc. will often eliminate
the need for physical solutions. The session is
then expanded to emphasis how attitude produces
respect in relationships and how it acts as a
front line defense against intimidations.
SESSION 2 - Walking Into Darkness The
second session deals exclusively with methods
of controlling fear and panic. You are taught
to channel the energy of sudden fright in short
but super levels of strength for defense and escape.
A study of fear is then made to show that it is
both natural and normal to have, and how the methods
of panic control can be tempered to face everyday
trials which tend to restrict personal growth.
SESSION 3 - Standing Against Strength
What to do when all else fails is the subject
of session three. The factual knowledge of sessions
one and two are put into exclusive application
for women by demonstrating methods of psyching
out your assailant, reacting without freezing,
executing without thinking, and hurting without
hitting.
SESSION 4 - Feeling Empowered The final
session centers on maintaining your self defense
capability. Special reaction drills are taught
and the defense patterns of session three are
reviewed so they can be practiced at home for
greater proficiency. The seminar concludes with
a discussion on what needs to be done to "Stick
to the B.A.S.I.C.S." to insure personal growth,
security and physical benefit.
